Abstract: The demographic factors affecting the Crusades of the Middle Ages are examined. The focus is on demographic conditions in countries that supplied the bulk of the Crusaders and on the demographic impact on the Crusaders' primary destination areas in Western Asia. The author notes that the period of the Crusades was one of rapid population increase in the countries of origin. He suggests that the rapid growth of the Egyptian population in the period following the Crusader conquests made their eventual reconquest inevitable. Demographic factors favoring the Crusaders' victories over the Albigensians, the Moors, and the Slavs within Europe are also considered.
