| 1. Title: Catholics for the Right to Decide in Brazil. [Católicos por el Derecho a decidir en Brasil] Source: Conscience. 2002 Spring;23(1):39-41. Abstract: By a decree in 1890, the separation of church and state was established in Brazil. Concerned with the social problems arising in the country, the Catholic Church became active through ecclesiastical base communities, which linked together Christian commitment and the struggle for social justice. In this context, the Catolicas pelo Direito de Decidir/Brasil (Catholics for the Right to Decide) or CDD/Brazil, was created in 1993 and the voice of Catholic women emerged in public opposition to the official position of the church. CDD/Brazil is a nongovernmental feminist organization that formulates and publicizes ethical-theological studies in an effort to reveal the positive nature of religion in women's lives. It also harnesses the positive functions of religion by highlighting positions supporting the autonomy of women found in the tradition, teachings, and contemporary theology of the church. Furthermore, it has brought perspectives to the debate on the condition of women and men and their relationships and rights, especially in the realm of reproduction and sexuality. Hence, it has become an obligatory reference point in the debate on sexuality and reproduction within the feminist movement as well as within the National Congress and the media. Spanish Abstract: La separación de la iglesia y el estado fué establecida en el Brasil por decreto en 1890. Preocupada con los problemas sociales que han venido apareciendo en el país, la Iglesia Católica se involucró a través de comunidades de base eclesiástica, las que unen el compromiso Cristiano y la lucha por la justicia social. En este contexto, las Católicas por el Derecho a Decidir/Brasil fué creada en 1993 y la voz de las mujeres católicas emergió en oposición pública a la posición oficial de la iglesia. CDD/Brasil es una organización feminista no gubernamental que formula y publica estudios ético-teológicos en un esfuerzo por revelar la naturaleza positiva de la religión en las vidas de las mujeres. También aprovecha las funciones positivas de la religión al resaltar las posiciones que apoyan la autonomía de las mujeres halladas en la tradición, enseñanzas, y teología contemporánea de la iglesia. Es más, ha brindado perspectivas al debate sobre la condición de las mujeres y los hombres y sus relaciones y derechos, especialmente en el campo de la reproducción y la sexualidad. Por lo tanto, se ha convertido en un punto de referencia obligatorio en el debate de la sexualidad y la reproducción no solo dentro del movimiento feminista, sino también en el Congreso Nacional y los medios de comunicación.
