Abstract: A debate on long-acting female contraceptives such as injectables and implants is presented in this document, wherein a distinguished international group of experts were persuaded to write about developments in subdermal contraceptive implants and injectable contraceptives. This document presents the comments by Mamdouh M. Shaaban of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Assuit University, by M. Toppozada of Alexandria University, and by Bassam Elhelw of Cairo, Egypt. In this paper, Shaaban focuses on the concerns about the relationship of Depo-Provera (DMPA) to certain gynecological cancers and osteoporosis. Moreover, concerns are raised about in-utero exposure to DMPA, increased HIV risk among DMPA users, and coercive use of DMPA. With regard to contraceptive implants, Shaaban discusses the side effects of Norplant use and concerns about biocompatibility of silicone-based materials and difficult removals. On the other hand, Toppozada discusses the use of injectables and implants. Elhelw considers issues concerning Norplant, such as reversibility, ectopic pregnancy, acceptability, and insertion/removal. Elhelw also touches on Implanon, progestogen-only injectable contraceptives, and combined injectable contraceptives.
