Family formation patterns and health--further studies: an international collaborative study in Colombia, Egypt, Pakistan, and the Syrian Arab Republic. Geneva, World Health Organization, 1981. :132-43. Abstract: The majority of families in the study of family formation in the Syrian Arab Republic was classified as nuclear. The proportion varied considerably by residence: 62.4% of the rural families were nuclear compared with 83.6% of families in industrial Sweida. The middle status women were found more often in nuclear households. In all groups, the mean age at marriage for eligible women was between 15 and 19 years. The percentage of women marrying before age 20 was greater in rural Aleppo than in either urban Damascus or Sweida. These differences were statistically significant. Gravidity increased steadily with age. The average age specific mean gravidity for eligible women in rural areas was higher for women in urban areas. At age 40-44, women in rural Aleppo had had on the average 9.6 pregnancies compared with 8.4 in Sweida and 8.7 in Damascus. The pattern for parity was similar to that for gravidity. Parity increased steadily with age and was higher in the lower social group in urban areas and in the middle social group in the rural area. The more education a woman had, the fewer births she was likely to experience. The mean family size increased with the age of the eligible woman. In all age groups, women who had married at an early age (less than 20) had more children than those who had married later in life. The ideal family size was more closely associated with residence, age, and parity than with social and educational factors. The average number of children considered ideal in rural areas was about 6 and in small towns (Sweida) about 5, and about 4 in Damascus.
