Center for Communication Programs Source: Communication Impact!. 2000 Apr;(9):1-2. Abstract: The Care for Health Campaign was the first national family planning (FP) promotion in Russia that used a strategic approach to increase demand for FP as a desirable, healthy alternative to abortion. The campaign was one element of the larger Women's Reproductive Health Program designed to improve the health of women and children by promoting change in existing FP communication and service delivery systems. Considering its specific objectives, the campaign was designed to bring FP into the public arena and to highlight its importance to women and families. This article discusses the impact of this campaign among women in Perm (a comparison site) and women in Ekaterinburg (an intervention site). The results were gathered by comparing a 1996 baseline survey with a 1998 follow-up survey. Overall, it is noted that Russian women are willing to accept alternatives to abortion as long as trained providers and strong FP promotion make contraceptive methods and services available.
