Center for Communication Programs Source: COMMUNICATION IMPACT. 1998 Jun;(2):1-2. Abstract: This paper reports the impact of a radio program called the Youth Variety Show on Kenyan youth. The Youth Variety Show begins its regular broadcasts from the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation in March 1995. The weekly, hour-long variety show encouraged young people in asking about the problems and challenges of adolescent life. It was not only designed to appeal directly to adolescents, but to the parents who welcomed the information and encouragement, which they needed in guiding their children. According to a market survey, more than 3.3 million adolescents listened to the show, and it became a major source of referral for all new clients at sentinel clinic sites. Furthermore, the Youth Variety Show was a major building block in Kenya Youth Initiatives Project, which was implemented through the collaborative efforts of 26 Kenyan youth-serving organizations interested in addressing the issues of reproductive health. The National Council sponsored the radio show for Population and Development and the Family Planning Association of Kenya, with assistance from Johns Hopkins University of Public Health Center and funding from USAID. The long-term goals of the Youth Initiatives Project were to contribute in the reduction unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS among Kenyan youth. This can only be achieved through information and education for youth and parents program, and networking and advocacy among policymakers and leaders.
