Center for Communication Programs Source: COMMUNICATION IMPACT. 1998 Jan;(1):1-2. Abstract: Two enter-educate serial radio soap operas broadcast in Nepal in 1996 had substantial impact on the demand for and provision of family planning services in rural areas. The first, "Cut Your Coat According to Your Cloth," sought to increase awareness among rural couples of the importance of planned families and contraceptive use. At two rural clinics in Dang, where almost half the villagers listened to the program, client visits more than doubled during the campaign period. The second program, "Service Brings Rewards," was designed as a distance education series to improve the contraceptive counseling and technical skills of rural health workers who are inaccessible to face-to-face training. It contained two drama and two interactive segments. 72% of health workers in the two rural clinics in Dang listened to the instructional series. The average post-test knowledge/skill score among rural health workers exposed to the program (10.1) exceeded that of workers trained in person (9.6) or not trained at all (5.9). Clinic-based observations and exit interviews indicated outcomes were most positive when both the health workers and their clients had listened to one or both programs, demonstrating a synergistic effect.
